The 2017 Delta Kappa Gamma Northeast Conference, Ontario, Canada

New York (Pi State) members in attendance at the Northeast Regional Conference.

The 2017 Delta Kappa Gamma Northeast Conference was held July 12-14,2017 at the Caesars Windsor Resort and Convention Centre in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The Conference emphasized Canadian culture, history and education.

Opening Night Presentation of Flags: Canada, United States, Puerto Rico, Ontario, Illinois, and Delta Kappa Gamma.

"Impacting the World and Its Cultures"

Guest speaker Charlene Bearhead, former education officer for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, spoke on behalf of the Canadian Indigenous peoples and the role of education to facilitate and support reconciliation across Canadian society.

"Love in a Canoe - Canada at 150"

Presented by the Karen Schuessler singers in a cross-country tour of songs by Canadian singer/songwriters.

Carolyn Pittman 2016 - 2018 DKG International President expressed the following: "DKG connections in learning, friendships, encouraging, promoting and honoring are important to all of us and each of us. Searching out opportunities for personal growth is the reason we are attending this Conference."

"Impacting World Education with DKG" Dr. Roseann Runte shared the importance DKG plays in education in a changing world. Dr. Runte was awarded the Order of Canada, the cornerstone of the Canadian Honours System, in recognition of her outstanding achievement and dedication to the community and service to the nation.

Barbara Bostwick-Quinn NY, Northeast Regional Representative for the US Forum Committee (www.usforumdkg.org) introduced speaker, Shelley Gilbert, Coordinator of Social Work Services, WEFIGHT Canada. Ms. Gilbert shared with members how Legal Assistance of Windsor at the University of Windsor, Ontario uses Community Board Advocacy from the street to the courtroom to address human trafficking and victims' needs.

Dr. Patricia A. Edwards received the Educator's Book Award for "New Ways to Engage Parents: Strategies and Tools for Teachers and Leaders, K-12." Dr. Edwards provides school leaders and classroom teachers with new and creative ways in which to welcome, encourage and involve parents.

Dr. Vivienne Collinson, the first recipient of the DKG Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award, transported members to the Arctic with its beauty and its environmental problems.

Presentation: "Impacting the World with Music" Mike Stevens, harmonica virtuoso, demonstrated his talent. He then shared how he became involved with Inuit children in isolated communities in Northern Ontario and Labrador, and how he was able to help the children explore their own musical expression.

Breakout Session with Lochie Musso, Alpha Eta Chapter, NY: "Equip Women to Promote Excellence in Education Worldwide" Possibilities were explored to engage educators in programs and projects and creating involvement to lead change globally and locally.

Breakout Session: "16+1=7" DKG representatives to the United Nations in attendance. Ways to promote the 17 Sustainable Development Goals in our classrooms, chapters, communities and daily lives were discussed which embody the DKG 7 Purposes.
