Welcome to Gamma Alpha

Manhattan, New York City

The Gamma Alpha Chapter of Pi State is one of the New York City Chapters located in Manhattan.

The distinguished members of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators (DKG)

have contributed their extraordinary talents to the national and international education community.

Dear Friends,

On May 11, 1929, Dr. Annie Webb Blanton, faculty member of the University of Texas and former state superintendent of public instruction in Texas, founded the Delta Kappa Gamma Society to honor and support key women educators. Dr. Blanton and eleven women educators representing various professional positions in education installed the first Alpha Chapter in Austin, Texas on June 3, 1929. Today, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International continues as a professional honor society representing approximately 75,000 women educators in 17 countries including the United States, Canada, Europe, Latin America and Japan.

Several members of our Gamma Alpha Chapter are also members of the Committee on Teaching About the United Nations (CTAUN) Since 1995, DKG maintains a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status with the United Nations and was granted consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council in 2003. DKG has representatives who regularly attend briefings, activities, and programs at the United Nations, especially those relating to education and human rights. The DKG relationship with the UN not only reinforces the Society’s international scope but also fulfills the seventh Society Purpose: “To inform members of current economic, social, political and educational issues so that they may participate effectively in a world society.”

If you are considering a career in teaching, if you are an active or retired member in any field of education, we invite you to view our chapter website, noting especially the link to the Benefits for Members that includes a list of scholarships, awards, stipends, and Grants-in-Aid. We welcome you to attend our Gamma Alpha meetings and share in the camaraderie of our talented sisters. As a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Key Women Educators you will have the opportunity to participate, interact and network with like-minded educators at local, state and regional conferences, and DKG international conventions. If you are interested in learning more or attending an upcoming event please contact Mary Metzger, Gamma Alpha Member, at mary100metzger@gmail.com

Delta Kappa Gamma

Purpose, joy, solidarity

Are found within this sisterhood

We meet, familiarity

We greet, sometimes hilarity

We plan for education's good

Within our scope, our neighborhood

Our sisters, found within our reach

Within the schools wherein we teach

Or as we travel far and wide

There are our sisters too

Across the globe where we abide,

Women of distinction, we are you.

Delta Kappa Gamma, a society distinct

Women of distinction, linked.
