Debbie Fudge-Rhen and Dr. Jean Lloyd Reading to students at P.S.305, Brooklyn

"Story time is the time when youngsters are enriched and enchanted by verbal magic. The language of stories in books, even in its simplest forms, is the language of the adult world. Through stories they will learn more and more complex patterns of speech, more beautiful and imaginative forms of expression so that their store of language will become richer and more varied as they grow."

"Building Vocabulary through Storytelling" at P.S. 305 in Brooklyn
A Pi State Educational Foundation Grant

During the summer (2015) Gamma Alpha members Debbie Fudge-Rhem and Dr. Jean Lloyd travelled to P.S. 305 in Brooklyn. They were implementing a proposal funded by a Pi State Foundation grant. The aim was to build the vocabularies of primary school children through storytelling.

They found a book I Love You Night and Day by Smriti Prasadam-Halls and Allison Brosn, and distributed copies to students. Two cute animals cement their friendship using rhymed couplets. They were able to teach students to define words, suggest similar words and use their hands to illustrate descriptive words like tall, high, far, wide, deep, low, huge, vast, smooth, and rough.

Barbara Berry Harris, Gamma Alpha, director of Woodwind Family, a social service at the school, was our facilitator and guide. A good time was had by all!

Make Me Laugh Day
Friars Club
New York City

On April 7, 2018, the Friars Club, DKG Gamma Alpha Chapter and other partners hosted children and their parents from Homes for the Homeless, NYC with a day of fun. Author Ginny Jordan presented her book, "What's Making Walter C. Laugh?"  The children interacted with Ms. Jordan as she read each whimsical page. The end of the book included pages for children to add their own ideas. The children were given free copies of the book, along with fun animal masks, sunglasses and snacks.

The reading was preceded by a sing-along, and followed by Animal BINGO, coloring time, and games. Gamma Alpha thanks Ms. Jordan for the wonderful time she created for the children!
